Problem

Situated in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Mesquite offers rodeo history, outdoor activities, and worthwhile attractions. A recent uptick in development and business expansions encouraged city leadership to develop an economic development plan focused on equitable sustainable growth and shared prosperity for Mesquite residents. However, there was ample room to include input and direction from a breadth of Mesquite residents and subject-matter experts.

Solution

We implemented an inclusive engagement strategy to solicit input from young professionals, small and large businesses, nonprofit, industry, and community leaders to inform and shape the city’s new 5-year economic development plan. We facilitated a series of in-person roundtable sessions and conducted in-depth interviews with elected officials and subject-matter experts. This gave us the unique perspectives and collected input we needed from 150+ Mesquite residents—from industry experts, small business owners, policymakers, and community leaders. The new plan included forward-thinking investments in infrastructure, advancing comprehensive strategic planning, and implementing a strong marketing and branding approach that celebrates the community’s diversity and family-friendly amenities.

Results

In 2022, Mesquite’s City Council unanimously voted to adopt and implement the economic development strategic plan. With our community/public engagement services, and ability to capture and amplify the voices of the Mesquite community itself, we’re excited to see how this vibrant community grows.
